MEMORANDUM TO: OPINION LEADERS
FROM: GARY SCHMITT
SUBJECT: Lehrman on Energy and the Bush Doctrine
I want to draw your attention to a piece (“Energetic America”) by Project director Lewis E. Lehrman in the latest Weekly Standard in which he argues that a stable, low-priced energy supply is indispensable to a robust economy and, in turn, an indispensable component of a sound U.S. national security strategy.
Analyzing past economic data, Lehrman notes that the sustained economic growth of the ‘50s and ‘60s occurred when energy prices were stable or declining and, not coincidentally, during a period when the U.S. was far more energy independent than it is now. Today, Lehrman writes, “with so much of our supply coming from undependable, insecure, and unstable parts of the world, our standard of living and national security are similarly unstable and vulnerable to political upheaval.” To restore greater energy independence, Lehrman offers policy recommendations designed to generate the economic growth necessary to finance “both a rising standard of living for all Americans at home and a successful Bush Doctrine abroad
